2002 AAU JR Olympic Gold Medalist
1973 and 1974 OVAC champion - Bob Mendenhall
of Linsly - Totally dominated all competition including the 2 time AAA State
champion from Wheeling High. Four starter at WVU and member of the Iowa Hawkeye
Wrestling Club, qualified for the 1980 Greco-Roman Olympic Trials.
During the 50s and 60s Ohio only had 1 division for wrestling pitting the best
vs the best at states. To qualify for states you had to win the district or
place 2nd--However, I think in some cases only 1 wrestler from the district
qualified for states.
Stats for those wrestlers
John Scordos
(1961-1964) - 75-5 career record. Three time
OVAC and district champ.
1962 - state qualifier
1963 - 3rd at states
1964 - state champ
Lost 1 match his jr and sr years
Steve Scipio
(1964-1967) 74-4 career record. Three time OVAC
champ and district champ.
1965 - 3rd at states (soph)
1966 - 2nd at states (jr)
1967 - state qualifier (sources in the know, told me he had an injured back at
states)
Jerry McDaniel
Four time state qualifier. Martins Ferry's first state qualifier. He qualified
the first year Martins Ferry had a team-- a remarkable feat.
Two time OVAC and district champ
State runner up his sr year.
Keith Sommer
Wrestled only 2 years because the wrestling team started his jr year.
OVAC and district champ his sr year.
State runner up his sr year. Was Martins Ferry's first state placer.
Bob Bruney
Wrestled on the first 3 wrestling squads.
OVAC and district champ his sr year.
Placed 3rd at states his sr year. His only loss. Rumor has it that Woody Hayes
was recruiting him prior to his semi match.
Jeff Jones
Wrestled on the first 3 wrestling squads.
OVAC and district champ
Placed 3rd at states his SR year. his only loss that year.
Jeff Sommer
3 time OVAC and district champ.
2 time state placer (runner up and 4th)
George Cherokee
from Shadyside was one of Ohio's first few to
win back to back Ohio state wrestling titles. He won at 165 lbs. in 1939 and
then jumped claimed the 185 title in 1940. He went on to start at guard for Ohio
State and played a year for the Browns.
Bridgeport's Dave LaMotte is also a good choice for the
1970's; was national champion at West Liberty in 1979! Also must include St.
Clairsville's Dave Delande in the 1980's 3x OVAC champ, state runner-up
and also went on to West Liberty and was at one point the all time career win
leader and two time runner-up in his career at West Liberty!
Willie Saxton (Buckeye Local '06)-2X
OVAC Champ; Ohio State Champion; won numerous national titles and was an
All-American on a few occasions in HS; wrestled at Mizzou for two seasons where
he was a starter for a while on a 'Top 5' NCAA DI school.
Abbie Rush (Wheeling Park '06)-4X OVAC Champ; 4X WV State placer
(unbelievably Abbie never won a state title); had a very successful college
career at Boston University wrestling as a 4-year starter for legendary coach,
Carl Adams.
Zach Schuller (Buckeye Local/St. Clairsville '06)-4X OVAC Champ; 3X Ohio
State placer; spent a year or so at Mizzou as a member of the wrestling team
there.
A few wrestlers from the early 2000's era (2000-2010) that have been National
Qualifiers for West Liberty in recent years are Lucas Huffman (River), Kayne
Melko (Bellaire St. Johns), Cody Tominack (Wheeling Park), and
Jarrod Shaw (Brooke).
Kyle Bauer 2011
2x Ovac champ,2X state champ, 2x Ovac
runner up, carreer record of 150-9.
Brian Roskovich
was 156-11 in his career...4x OHSAA State
Placer and was D-III Outstanding Wrestler his senior year after he Teched a kid
in the finals who would go on to place 6th at the High School Nationals. He did
not give up a point his senior year. He was an All-American as well and a 4 year
starter at Ohio State where he held team records for most back points, majors,
and tf, his Junior and Senior year. Was NCAA Qual. And 4x Academic All Big 10.
