Bellaire impressive in winning Last Man Standing mat event• Jefferis
wins showdown with Chilson en route to MVP Bellaire finished second to Caldwell at the 2008 Shadyside Last Man Standing wrestling tournament. That only left a bad memory in the Big Reds' minds. Remembering that, Shane Shaffer's talented squad was never seriously challenged Saturday as it turned the table on the second-place Redskins with a 53.5-point victory, 315-261.5, in a drizzly Tiger Town. "We had really good rounds to start off the tournament," Shaffer explained. "I just wished we would have wrestled better in the finals. We had a couple of letdowns. A couple of matches that we should have won, but we just didn't do the things we needed to do to win those matches." Shaffer added that the Bellaire program, including the 'B' team, had 18 individuals place in the top six of their respective weight classes. With Bellaire already etched upon the nameplate of the team trophy, it was time for nine Big Red grapplers to try for individual honors. However, only a trio of BHS matmen would capture titles - those being Erik Canter (130), Sam Faykus (135) and Derek Porter (152). Canter, a returning OVAC champion who is now 23-1,, made quick work of Barnesville's Quentin Castello with a first-period pin in 1:48. Faykus, now 21-4, outlasted Caldwell's Clint Boyd, 1-0, while Porter ran his record to 23-2 with a lightning-quick fall of Beallsville's Taylor Kinzy in a mere 30 seconds. Six Bellaire grapplers settled for second place, including two-time state qualifier Robbie Chilson, who suffered his first loss in 19 matches. Other runnerups were Josh Davis (103), Zach Porter (112), Jake Foster (125), Jesse Dobson (140) and Andrew Crook (160). Chilson and Barnesville's Kurtis Jefferis were matched in the feature bout of the night at 145 pounds, but the match never lived up to the hype as the Shamrock senior dominated from the get-go. Jefferis, who upped his seasonal log to 18-0 and moved to within 22 wins of 100 for his career, broke a scoreless tie early in the second period when he earned an escape. He made it 3-0 with a takedown late in the period. After Chilson made it 3-1 with an escape of his own, Jefferis quickly regained the upperhand with another takedown. The Shamrock middleweight said wrestling Chilson last year (a 3-2 loss in the districts) gave him a pretty good scouting report on what to expect. "I knew he likes to shoot alot (for takedowns)," Jefferis said. "he always likes to shoot on the left leg, so I just tried to stay away from that." For his accomplishments in the one-day tournament, Jefferis was named the Outstanding Wrestler. Caldwell also had a trio of titlists in the Border brothers - Jeremy (103) and Jacob (125) - and Seth Todd (171). Shadyside and Barnesville each finished with a pair of kingpins, while Wheeling Central, Union Local, Monroe Central and Bridgeport all had one. Seniors Johnny Merryman (160) and Jerry Kahl (189) made the hometown fans proud, while John Barker (119) joined Jefferis as Shamrock titlists. Kyle Bauer (112) represented the Marron Knights, while the Jets' Mitch Friede (140) won in overtime. Monroe Central's Schuyler Bondy (215) is now 18-0 and the Bulldogs' West has a 16-1 mark at 285.
