Hoping to boost their OVAC seedings, 13 mat programs will be showcasing their talent this weekend as coach Scott Kinemond's Shadyside Tigers will host their annual high school tournament.

“There are going to be some good match-ups here this weekend,” Kinemond said after releasing the tournament brackets. “You'll see some good kids in a lot of the middle weights and some solid championship matches.”

The Tiger’s two-day grind will iron out a lot of question marks for the coaches and spectators as they head into the 2008 Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Tournament, which gets underway in two weeks.

“A lot of these guys need to get themselves up for this weekend to get a better seed at the OVAC meet,” Kinemond explained. “There are a lot of local teams which is good for OVAC seeding, but I would like to continue to have the tournament grow by getting teams from out of town for us to wrestle.”

Potentially the biggest bout of the tournament could come in a form of a rematch of Wednesday night's 145-pound with Beallsville’s Jimmy Reisz and Bellaire’s Robbie Chilson.

The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the 145-pound bracket, both have brought home hardware from the state tournament as well as the OVAC tournament.

“I am looking forward to seeing them wrestle,” Bellaire coach Shane Shaffer. “I have no idea on how the match will turn out. That is the beauty of the sport.”

Reisz will have the upper hand after winning Wednesday's battle, but these two will face each other multiple times before the season ends in OVAC, sectional and district mat tournaments.

It is very possible to be an OVAC finals match.

“Jimmy is a real smart wrestler. The more he wrestles someone the better he usually does,” Beallsville coach Clint Abbott. “The more he wrestles Robbie the better he’s do. Jimmy wants to wrestle the best competition."

Another potential OVAC finals match will come at 145-pounds as St. John Central’s Zach Kosky and Aaron Porter have earned No. 1 and No. 2 seeds.

Both fell short in last year’s OVAC tournament, as Kosky was runner up to John Marshall graduate Brandon Richey and while Porter was stunned by Wheeling Central’s Zach Basich.

“Shadyside is going to serve as a precursor before going into the OVAC tournament in many weight classes,” Shaffer commented.

Entering the most No. 1 seeded wrestlers in the tournament will be St. John Central with Jake Foster (125) Shane Foster (135) and Kosky (145).

Other top seeded wrestlers include Wheeling Central's Kyle Bauer (103), Barnesville’s Jon Barker (112), Bellaire’s Sam Faykus (119), Union Local's Chase Clark (130) and Adam Macy (189), Shadyside's Johnny Merryman (152), Bridgeport's Bryan Skoff (160) and Sean West (285), Wheeling Park's Lucas Goodwin (171) and Monroe Central's Schuyler Bondy (215).
