1. 321 Wheeling Park A Park wins Doan Ford wrestling titleDecember 4, 2010 - By KIM NORTH, T-L Sports WriterThe 2010-11 high school wrestling season kicked off Saturday with the 12th annual Doan Ford Invitational at Union Local High School in Morristown. Wheeling Park's 'A' team captured the 17-team event with 321 points. Buckeye Local was second with 280, while Union Local finished third with 244. The Jets also had the most individual champions with three, while Wheeling Park 'A', Weir and River each had a pair. Bellaire, Bloom Carroll, St. John Central, Watkins Memorial and Tuscarawas Central Catholic all had one titlist. "Our goal was to have five championships, but three is nice," Union Local first-year head coach Jim Bob Lewis allowed. "We had a pair of runnersup, so I'm very happy with the way we wrestled." Claiming titles for UL were 103-pound freshman Zach Sowers, 171-pound senior Jacob Hearn and 189-pound sophomore Cade Sigler. Sowers won his championship via pool records. "Zach is solid," Lewis said. "We knew he had the ability, but we just didn't know where he'd be to start the season." Hearn, the top seed, defeated Wheeling Park's Luke Braunlich by a 6-4 count. "Jacob is wrestling really solid to start the season," Lewis added. "He did a good job today." Sigler topped Meadowbrook's Mike Haynes in his championship bout. "I was very impressed with Cade's performance," Lewis continued. "He's coming on strong." Kosky, St. John Central's senior 140-pounder, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler after he rallied past Wheeling Park's Hans Rogerson in a spirited title tilt. Trailing 1-0 after two periods, the Irish senior recorded an early third-period escape and then took Rogerson down with a nifty move for a 3-1 advantage with 1:39 remaining. After the Patriots' grappler escaped to make it 3-2, Kosky was awarded a penalty point when Rogerson slapped him upside the head at the 59-second mark. With time winding down and Rogerson on the attack, Kosky made his final move and scored a two-point takedown to seal the deal. "I felt his momentum pushing on me, so I dipped under and got the double-leg takedown," Kosky explained of his late maneuver. "He's a good wrestler, but I came in here the No. 1 seed." Kosky finished 36-10 last season with a sixth-place in the district tournament. River's two titlists included workout mates Josh Bartrug (119) and Devin Talbott (125). Bartrug needed a late rally to hold off Buckeye Local's Nathan Kirk, 6-1, while Talbott pinned Weir's Hunter McLaughlin in 4:46. Bartrug, who was a state meet qualifier last season, trailed 1-0 after two periods before scoring six unanswered points for the win, including five in the final eight ticks. With the score deadlocked at 1, Bartrug recorded a takedown with eight seconds left that resulted in a three-point nearfall. "Josh didn't wrestle his best by any means," River head coach Marty Winkler said. "He was a little rusty on finishing his takedowns, but he is wrestling up a weight class right now. He's going to try and get down to 112 and if he does, I can see him repeating at OVACs." Talbott had little trouble with his Red Rider opponent. "Devin won all of his matches by pins," Winkler noted. "He's also up a (weight) class and will drop down to 119." Bellaire head coach Shane Shaffer was very pleased with Davis's title run in which he defeated UL's Mitchell Friede, 5-3. "Josh has worked really hard in the wrestling room," the Big Reds' boss said. Wheeling Park's champions included Kyle Bauer (130) and Cody Beriford (152). The Patriots also had four runnersup, a trio of third-place finishers and a fourth-place winner. Other champions were Bloom Carroll's Sean Regoli (112); Weir's tandem of Jess Bennett (145) and Darrin Starr (285); Watkins Memorial's Joey Cameron (160) and Tuscarawas Central catholic's Bryan Adams (215). Buckeye Local placed second despite not having a champion. The Panthers recorded a trio of runnersup, four third-placers and three fourth-placers. North can be reached at knorth@timesleaderonline.com
