West Branch took the team overall and Div. II title with 201 points Saturday

AUSTINTOWN — Austintown Fitch High’s Louis Greco, after defending his 145-pound title at the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League championships on Saturday, has his sights already set on Columbus.

Greco (32-3) pinned Eric Rogel of West Branch in 3 minutes, 29 seconds on Saturday, said his goal is to make it back to state and place in the top three.

“I just know around this time of the year, I have to step up and wrestle the best I can and I did that today,” said Greco (32-3).

He helped the Falcons to a first-place finish in Division I with 180 points, but West Branch was the overall and Div. II champion with 201 points. Girard won the Div. III title with 101.5 and Pymatuning Valley won Div. IV with 58.

“Rogel was a solid wrestler and that it was a good, touch match,” said Greco, who finished third at the EOWL event as a freshman and sophomore.

John Dillon, a freshman at Boardman, got the championships underway winning by a 15-4 major decision over Beaver Local’s John McComas at 103 pounds.

“Dillon (6-0) started his varsity career Friday and we are pleased the way things turned out for him because he has a bright future with us,” said Spartans’ assistant coach Bob Foster.

“It’s a pleasure to coach John,” said Foster. “He works hard at practice and helps the other young guys and we are proud to have him on the team.”

Dillon said he has prepared himself for tournament time.

“I didn’t expect to win by that kind of a score, but I’ve worked hard all year to get to where I am,” said Dillon. “Now I want to go on to the sectionals and do the best I can. I know the competition well be a lot tougher.”

Robby Reed (19-8) of Canfield decisioned Jerry Pasquale of Boardman 8-2 for the 119 title in the first meeting between the two this season.

“I just kept moving on the bottom, stayed strong on my feet and did the things I needed to do to win the match,” said Reed.

“I’ll probably see Jerry again in the sectional tournament and it will be a tough match.”

West Branch’s Jake Mellinger (27-2) , a junior, decisioned Tony Cardiero of Girard, 2-1, in the finals at 130. It was the second time this season that Mellinger bested Cardiero, also winning 6-3 at the Painesville Riverside tournament.

“I wrestled pretty well today,” said Mellinger. “I scored the two points with a single sweep, where I circled around outside of his leg and then took him down.

“I would like to go on and make it to state because I came up short last year placing sixth at district.”

After Howland’s Kyle Leek (29-2) decisioned Dann Miller of Brookfield 4-2 for the 140-pound title, he said “The team’s immediate goal is to beat Hubbard Wednesday and complete our regular season dual matches unbeaten [10-0].”

“He [Miller] was sweaty throughout our match and that made it somewhat difficult for me to do some of the things I wanted to, but he was a big, strong kid,” said Leek.

A state qualifer at 125 pounds last year, Leek will be going after his fourth straight sectional title in two weeks.

Also winning championships were Arizona Miller of Beaver Local (112), Jon Matacic of Jackson Milton (125), Manuel Cintron of Alliance (135), Aron Brenner of Canfield (152), Weston Rajkovich of Boardman (160), Eric Bates of West Branch (171), Cody Hartman of Canfield (189), Chris Miller of Fitch (215) and J.J. Intorre of Beaver Local (275).

Before the finals got underway, the EOWL Hall of Fame inductees were introduced. They were David Tomaino (Jackson-Milton), David Miller (Pymatuning Valley), James Phillips (Howland), Derek Oney (Alliance), Greg Birkhimer (West Branch), David King (Liberty), Richard Kenney (Fitch) and Brian Hennessey (Brookfield). The Brian Davidson Memorial Courage award went to Jackson-Milton coach Dave Tomaino.
